Vitamin D is necessary for normal bone growth and development in children.
The recommended daily requirement of vitamin D for infants from 0 to 6 months is 7.5 micrograms (300 IU) and for children from 6 months to 10 years is 10 micrograms (400 IU).
According to experts, adolescent children with risk factors for vitamin D deficiency who do not obtain 400 IU/day from drinking one liter of fortified milk or foods or from adequate sun exposure should receive a vitamin D supplement of 400 IU/day.
